Getting your VISA

Every international student is given a period of time to work with student visa. This is an F-1, it allows you 12 months to work. To study in the US legally you’ll need a student VISA (called an ‘F-1 VISA’). Full instructions on how to obtain one can be found here:

Working in the US

If you are a STEM student you get 24 extra months of work period, called OPT. DHS maintains a complete list of fields that fall within the regulatory definition of “STEM field” that qualifies certain degrees to fulfill the extension requirement. This list is known as the STEM Designated Degree Program list.

CPT - Curricular practical training - You are studying a course at college. You should get practical training for this course by doing a job. This is that.

OPT - Optional practical training - You can choose to to more practical work as a student.

This is how International students typically plan out their time working.

If STEM student you get 2 years of extra OPT

You are permitted to have two concurrently valid visas, but not two valid visas of the same type

If you have both a B1/B2 visa for tourism purposes and an E-2 visa for business purposes, you can use either visa to enter the United States depending on the purpose of your trip. Your B1/B2 visa will not be cancelled when you receive your E-2 visa.

You can't have two valid visas of the same type in your passport at the same time. For example, you can't have two valid H-1B visa stamps at the same time. However, you may be allowed to work for other employers in the same visa category as long as you have USCIS approval. This means that you could be approved for one H-1B visa, get a visa stamp at the consulate, and then get USCIS approval for a second H-1B employer in the U.S. and work for both. Similarly, Canadian or Mexican nationals can have multiple TN jobs in the U.S. as long as they are approved to work for the employer.
