It is a lot of work. One way to gauge your genuine interest in the US, and for anything, is seeing how much time you naturally spend engaging in the subject and learning more. Do you find yourself watching videos on how to get into x college, looking at interesting majors on the website, or just researching? You're probably interested. Now you need to decide whether the US is for you or not. This should be a gut feeling/intuition. Are you prepared to shoot, even if it might not work out? In what country do you want to grow? Do you want it or is it your family/friend’s goal? Will your life be better in a different country? Will you get this opportunity again?
